Over six feet long, this monumental console table by Olivier Gagnère was commissioned in 1993 by cult French fashion designers, Marithé + François Girbaud upon opening their multi-floor space in New York. The incredible hand gauge detailing found on the oak back, front and legs displays rarely seen craftsmanship. Slightly concave, the back cups the desk and legs, giving this large piece a delicate swooping motion. The legs and drawers are sheathed in bright red, supple leather. The drawers glide in and out smoothly with large, robust handles made of solid gilt bronze, pleasing to the touch. The top of the desk is smooth with triangular inlays adding yet another dimension to this striking piece of art furniture.

Olivier Gagnère was a close friend of Ettore Sottsass before Memphis. Gagnère's work is said to have been influential on early Memphis creations but very quickly he took his distance from the movement to develop a more personal style. Compared to Memphis’ industrial-like production and materials, Gagnère’s style is fiercely grounded in classic French furniture history and its centennial tradition of master craft and quality. Despite this strong bond to the past, his style expresses the essence and refinement of contemporary design.

At the time the desk was commissioned, Olivier Gagnère was represented by Galerie Néotù alongside Garouste & Bonetti, founding the art furniture movement in the 1980-1990s in France. As Garouste & Bonetti were establishing themselves as heavy weights in the art furniture movement, Gagnère had the same aura and influence on the world of design and creation.
